14 Days Saved in Calgary: How BKM Gray HDPE Mats Kept a Residential Project Moving Through Rain and Thaw

Project Overview

The customer was working on a large residential construction project in Panorama Hills, Calgary.

The site entered a difficult stage during the spring and summer rainy season. Snowmelt and continuous rain made the backfilled soil soft and muddy. At the same time, civil work, landscaping work, material delivery, and model-home area preparation were happening together.

Small excavators, loaders, material vehicles, and workers all needed to move through the site. But the ground was too soft for stable access. Vehicles could sink, grass and landscaped areas could be damaged, and material transport started to slow down.

The project also had strict handover deadlines. If the work stopped because vehicles could not enter the site, the delay could affect multiple housing sections and create penalty risk.

Steel plates were not the best option for this site either. In winter and early spring, snow and ice could build up on the surface, increasing slip risk for workers and vehicles.

The customer needed a temporary access solution that could handle mud, rain, freeze-thaw weather, and mixed construction traffic without becoming a permanent road.

Our Solution

What BKM Recommended and Did

BKM recommended gray HDPE ground protection mats for the key access areas: internal temporary routes, material storage areas, model-home landscape zones, lawn protection areas, and small working platforms near excavation edges.

First order specification:

* Base thickness: 1/2 inch / 12.7 mm

* Thickness with one-sided texture: 17.7 mm

We recommended this specification because the customer needed a mat that could be moved by one to two workers, but still support small vehicles, light equipment, and material transport.

Each mat covers 2.88 m².

With 200 mats, the customer had about 576 m² of protected coverage.

If arranged as a 2.4m-wide temporary road, the mats could create about 240m of access route. If arranged as a wider 4.8m route for two-way movement or loading areas, the same quantity could cover about 120m of road.

The gray color was also useful for this project. It looked cleaner around model-home and landscape areas than black mats and helped the temporary routes blend better with the residential site environment.

The one-sided anti-slip tread helped workers and vehicles move more safely on muddy or wet ground. The HDPE material was also easier to clean, remove, and reuse than gravel or temporary fill.

The customer was importing from China for the first time, so BKM also recommended DDP shipping to reduce his concerns about customs clearance and local delivery.

During production, we provided process updates, including testing videos, production videos, packing videos, and loading videos. The customer could check the mat surface, logo marking, quantity, packing condition, and shipment progress before the goods left the factory.

Result and Takeaway

After the mats arrived, the customer used them to build temporary vehicle routes and pedestrian paths across the muddy residential site.

The mats helped keep material transport moving, reduced direct damage to grass and landscape areas, and gave small equipment a more stable route during wet weather.

According to the project feedback, the temporary access solution helped shorten the overall schedule by 14 days and reduced slip-and-stuck incidents by about 92%.

After the work was completed, the mats were removed and recovered. Some were transferred to later construction sections, while others were reused around backyard and patio areas as anti-slip base material or landscape protection layers.

The customer also reduced lawn repair work and received fewer complaints from homeowners and site teams.

For residential developers and contractors, the value is not only in getting vehicles through mud. A reusable HDPE mat system can protect finished landscape areas, reduce site repair work, support winter and rainy-season access, and move from one construction phase to the next.

For this project, the 1200 × 2400 mm gray HDPE mat worked because it matched the real site conditions: soft backfilled soil, changing work areas, residential appearance requirements, and urgent handover pressure.
