From Trial Order to 6 Years of Container Orders: BKM Turf Protection Mats for a Canadian Landscaping Company
Project Overview
The customer was a city landscaping and green space management company in Canada.
Their daily work included lawn maintenance, municipal landscaping, turf repair, and construction support in public green areas. During these projects, small excavators often needed to move across grass areas without damaging the turf.
The equipment was not extremely heavy, but it still mattered. A 3-ton mini excavator can easily leave ruts on soft grass, especially after rain or irrigation.
When the customer contacted BKM, they wanted a mat that could protect the lawn, support small machines, and remain easy enough for workers to carry and install.
Their main concerns were :
* The mat had to support about 3-ton small excavators;
* The product could not be too heavy for field crews;
* It needed to protect grass during landscaping work;
* The first order had to control cost before long-term purchasing;
* Future batches had to stay consistent for repeated container orders.
Our Solution
What BKM Recommended and Did
After discussing the customer’s equipment weight and working conditions, BKM recommended a smaller lightweight HDPE turf protection mat.
Recommended specification:
* Material: HDPE
* Size: 1000 × 2000 mm / 3.28 ft × 6.56 ft
* Base thickness: 10 mm
* Thickness with two-sided texture: 20 mm
* Weight: about 22 kg per mat
* Effective area: 2.00 m² per mat
* Dynamic load: 20–30 tons
* Static load: 50 tons
* Surface: double-sided anti-slip tread
* Use: turf protection, landscaping work, municipal green space maintenance, small excavator access
BKM did not recommend a heavier mat for this first use. The customer needed to protect grass while keeping the product easy to move on different sites.
At about 22 kg per mat, the 1000 × 2000 mm size was easier for crews to carry, lay, stack, and collect after the job. It also helped reduce unnecessary cost while still meeting the customer’s requirement for small excavator access.
Each mat covers 2.00 m².
Every 100 mats provide about 200 m² of lawn protection.
If laid as a 2m-wide temporary access route, 100 mats can create about 100m of protected path. If used as a wider working area, the same mats can be arranged around turning points, equipment parking areas, or turf repair zones.
During the order process, BKM’s technical team and sales staff kept communicating with the customer about the specification, use conditions, and order details.
In production, BKM followed its SOP sales service process and regularly sent progress updates, photos, and videos for customer confirmation. The customer could check the production status, mat surface, packing condition, and shipment progress before delivery.
Result and Takeaway
After the trial order, the customer was satisfied with the mat selection.
The 1000 × 2000 × 10 mm HDPE mat protected turf during landscaping work and remained easy for crews to handle on site. It gave the customer the balance they needed: enough support for small excavators, without the extra cost and handling pressure of a heavier mat.
After the trial order, the customer began placing full-container customized orders on a regular cycle.
The cooperation has continued for six years.
For landscaping companies and municipal green space teams, the heaviest mat is not always the best choice. When the equipment is around 3 tons and the work area changes frequently, handling weight, turf protection, storage, and repeat use are just as important as load capacity.
For this customer, the smaller 1000 × 2000 mm HDPE mat became a practical long-term product because it matched the real job: protecting grass, supporting small machines, moving between sites, and keeping each batch consistent over years of repeat orders.
