Crane Support Pads for Soft Ground & Swampy Terrain
Besides soft soil, hard-looking surfaces can also create pressure hot spots, edge loading, and surface damage when the force under the outrigger is concentrated into a small contact area. Crane support pads are designed to give crane outriggers and stabilizers a larger, more reliable bearing surface during setup. These pads help spread the outrigger reaction force, reduce ground bearing pressure, and improve stability before the lift begins on soil, gravel, grass, asphalt shoulders, concrete, compacted fill, or mixed jobsite ground.

This is because the load path changes as the equipment works to one side. Side reach can change how the machine is loading each support point. Do not assume the setup is fine just because the surface looks flat.
Because weak spots are not always obvious at the moment of setup. Pressure changes over time can reveal soft spots in the ground, especially as the lift progresses or the working radius changes. That is why you should assess the ground condition first, not as a quick visual check only.
The safer approach is to size around actual ground-bearing pressure and site condition. When the ground is questionable, you should go bigger and thicker rather than trying to make a minimum-size pad work.
