What Are Ground Protection Mats?
Ground protection mats -- also known as construction mats, access mats, temporary road mats, or trackway mats -- are heavy-duty plastic panels manufactured from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) or UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). They are placed on soft, vulnerable, or unstable ground to evenly spread out the load from heavy machinery, vehicles, and pedestrian traffic to avoid any damage to the ground.
HDPE ground protection mats are much lighter than conventional wood mats or steel mats. They are also chemically inert, UV-resistant, and recyclable. They do not need any maintenance and can easily withstand hundreds of uses without suffering from rotting or rusting.
Ground Protection Mat Types & Categories
From lightweight turf protection panels to ultra-heavy-duty crane mats, we manufacture the full spectrum of HDPE and UHMWPE ground protection solutions for every industry and application.
Light-Duty Ground Protection Mat
Heavy-Duty Ground Protection Mat
Cellular Core Heavy-Duty Ground Protection Mat
Heavy-Duty Ground Protection Systems
Engineered HDPE and composite matting systems for temporary access roads, stable work platforms, and demanding construction or infrastructure projects.
Heavy-Duty Solid HDPE Ground Protection Mats
Reusable solid-core access mats designed to spread vehicle and equipment loads, improve traction, and create temporary roadways, turning areas, work pads, parking zones, and pedestrian routes over soft or sensitive ground.

Stable Access Across Mud, Grass, Sand, Gravel, and Uneven Ground
The wide solid panel footprint reduces concentrated wheel and track pressure, helping control rutting, surface displacement, and vehicle bogging while keeping crews and equipment moving through changing site conditions.
Purpose-Built Traction Profiles
Raised vehicle tread improves tire grip and mud displacement; a lower-profile side can support pedestrian routes and selected solid-tire equipment.
Flexible Layout & Connection Options
Two-way and four-way connectors help form straight roads, widened passing zones, parking pads, work platforms, and turning areas while limiting panel movement.
Fast Handling, Recovery & Reuse
Integrated handholds, manageable panel formats, and dry-lay installation reduce setup time. Non-porous HDPE can be washed, inspected, stacked, and moved to the next project.
Load Distribution & Rut Control
The broad panel area spreads vehicle loads across more ground, reducing point pressure that can cut ruts, damage turf, destabilize finished surfaces, or leave equipment stuck.
Weather-Resistant HDPE Construction
HDPE does not absorb water, rot, splinter, or delaminate like plywood. UV-stabilized material options support repeated outdoor use in wet, muddy, corrosive, or variable-weather environments.
Configurable Site Coverage
Panels can be installed as a single track, double track, full-width roadway, widened corner, laydown zone, or work pad. Connector spacing and seam layout can be adapted to site traffic.
Typical Project Applications
One mat system, multiple temporary access requirements
Construction Access
Dump trucks, service vehicles, loaders, telehandlers, skid steers, and material delivery routes.
Utilities & Infrastructure
Power-line access, pipeline work, road maintenance, telecom projects, and remote repairs.
Landscaping & Property Protection
Access across lawns, driveways, pavers, paths, cemeteries, parks, and finished residential surfaces.
Events & Temporary Facilities
Production routes, parking, pedestrian paths, tent floors, staging areas, and service access.
Equipment & Material Staging
Laydown yards, storage pads, portable restroom areas, temporary workshops, and loading zones.
Sensitive or Weak Ground
Mud, wet soil, loose sand, soft grass, gravel, uneven ground, and other low-bearing surfaces.
Select by Site Conditions, Not Tonnage Alone
Published static-load figures do not describe every real site. Final mat selection and layout should consider the complete operating condition.
- Ground bearing capacity and moisture
- Gross vehicle, axle, wheel, or track load
- Turning, braking, slope, and repeated passes
- Mat thickness, seam direction, and connectors
- Installation duration and required ground protection
Cellular Core Heavy-Duty Ground Protection Mat
Designed for the same class of heavy-duty temporary access and work-platform applications as established large-format composite mat systems.

Sealed Cellular-Core Construction for Temporary Roads and Work Pads
The single-piece composite body spreads wheel and track loads over soft, muddy, uneven, or environmentally sensitive ground while creating a stable surface for repeated heavy-equipment movement.

Sealed Cellular-Core Body
Rigid internal structure without open drainage cells

Soft-Ground Access
Temporary roads over mud, sand, wetlands, and weak soil

Interlocking Roadway Surface
Connected panels help control gaps and differential movement

Mechanical Handling
Designed for forklift or crane-assisted deployment
Continuous Interlocking Surface
Connected large-format mats form a unified roadway or work platform that helps reduce panel separation, uneven transitions, and surface movement.
Sealed, Non-Porous Construction
The closed composite body resists water absorption and is easier to wash between projects, helping reduce the transfer of mud, seeds, and site contaminants.
Heavy Load Distribution
The rigid cellular core spreads concentrated vehicle and equipment loads across a wider footprint to support access over unstable terrain and reduce rutting.

Important Selection Considerations
- • Always base selection on the heaviest single-axle load, not total vehicle weight.
- • Ground bearing pressure (GBP) of the underlying soil significantly affects required mat thickness.
- • On very soft ground (GBP <30 kPa), consider using two overlapping mat layers or a geotextile substrate.
- • For slopes >15°, use mats with anchor holes and stakes to prevent sliding.
- • Contact our engineering team for site-specific load calculations and recommendations.

Ground Protection Mat FAQ
Answers to the most common questions from buyers, contractors, and rental companies worldwide.
Q01 What sizes are available for ground protection mats?
Our ground protection mats are available in a wide range of standard sizes to suit different applications:
- 1.2m × 2.4m (4ft × 8ft) — most popular for construction sites
- 1.5m × 3.0m (5ft × 10ft) — ideal for heavy crane outrigger areas
- 0.6m × 1.2m (2ft × 4ft) — compact mats for tight access routes
Custom sizes are available with a minimum order quantity. Contact us for a tailored quote.
Q02 What material are the mats made from, and why does it matter?
All our ground protection mats are manufactured from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) — a premium engineering plastic chosen for industrial applications because it offers:
- ✅ High impact resistance under heavy loads
- ✅ Low water absorption — no warping or swelling in wet conditions
- ✅ Chemical and UV resistance for outdoor longevity
- ✅ Low friction coefficient for easy repositioning
Compared to timber or composite alternatives, HDPE mats are fully recyclable, rot-proof, and reusable across hundreds of deployments.
Q03 What is the maximum load capacity?
Load capacity depends on mat thickness and the ground bearing pressure beneath:
| Thickness | Typical Load Rating | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| 12mm | Up to 40 tonnes | Light vehicles, pedestrian access |
| 18mm | Up to 80 tonnes | Heavy trucks, excavators |
| 25mm | Up to 120 tonnes | Cranes, heavy plant machinery |

Q04 Can the mats be connected together to form a continuous access road?
Yes. All our ground protection mats feature an integrated interlocking connector system that allows mats to be linked end-to-end or side-by-side to create:
- Temporary access roads across soft or sensitive ground
- Large work platforms for crane operations
- Event flooring for outdoor festivals and exhibitions
Each mat also includes carry handles and optional anchor holes for secure staking on slopes or windy conditions.
Q05 Are the mats suitable for use on grass or sensitive surfaces?
Absolutely. Ground protection mats are specifically engineered to protect grass, turf, and ecologically sensitive surfaces while allowing heavy equipment to operate safely. Key features include:
- Flexible HDPE material that conforms to uneven terrain without cracking
- Anti-slip surface texture on both sides to prevent mat migration
- Distributed load spreading that dramatically reduces ground PSI (pounds per square inch)
They are widely used for golf courses, sports fields, landscaped parks, and heritage sites where ground preservation is a priority.
Q06 What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) and lead time?
