What Are Ground Protection Mats?

Ground protection mats -- also known as construction mats, access mats, temporary road mats, or trackway mats -- are heavy-duty plastic panels manufactured from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) or UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). They are placed on soft, vulnerable, or unstable ground to evenly spread out the load from heavy machinery, vehicles, and pedestrian traffic to avoid any damage to the ground.

HDPE ground protection mats are much lighter than conventional wood mats or steel mats. They are also chemically inert, UV-resistant, and recyclable. They do not need any maintenance and can easily withstand hundreds of uses without suffering from rotting or rusting.

Ground protection mats are designed for fast, tool-free installation. A typical 1,000 sq ft temporary road can be installed by a two-person crew in under two hours.

Survey the ground conditions, identify soft spots, slopes, and drainage. Determine the required coverage area and load requirements.

Surface Preparation

Remove large debris and level obvious high spots. For very soft ground, consider a geotextile fabric layer beneath the mats for added stability.
